I first met Peter as a member of the Lions Club of Torquay.
Peter was a highly respected member of the club, where he enjoyed the fellowship of the members while he actively supported & participated in all club activities.
Betty & I shared his friendship and interest in both cacti & orchids. We often shared cuttings & propagations of various plants. His shared knowledge of these plants enabled us to get greater pleasure of our garden. Our cactus garden will always bring pleasant memories of Peter.
Our love & condolence to Jane & Family. Our thoughts are with you all.
R.I.P. our friend.
Ron & Betty Waters.

Peter. We shared a lot of laughs together. Your warm unassuming nature endeared you me and my family. We shared a common interest in motor cars and an interest in the events of our respective families. Will miss hearing from the "Torquay Correspondent" mate. It was really good to know you Pete. Travel in peace. Neil Whiffin and family.

Peter was one of best people I have known. At Grovedale, he led us in science, helped us keep our sanity with his lovely manner and humour, and made us comfortable with the jobs we had to do. I once thought that I would like to try my hand at teaching VCE chemistry, but soon realised how much better Peter would do the job. His background in industrial chemistry and years of experience allowed him to weave a tale which was great to listen to, and inspiring for many students. He was a teacher who made a difference in the lives of students.
All year we waited for his speech at the end of VCE breakup. We were never disappointed. Dressed in his academic gown, he delved into the experiences of the students, finding those times when they were “not always showing their best side”, but done light-heartedly so no one took offence.
He joined in the musical tributes for staff who were retiring, helping to make their final day something to remember. There wouldn’t be a staff member or student who couldn’t say something positive about Peter.
Sometimes I feel that the world is a lesser place when a special individual leaves this earth. This is true for me (and for many more) when I think of Peter. Some people think everyone can be replaced. I’m sure you agree with me, when you think of your Peter that this is not so. He was a special individual with a wonderful family to support him. Life will be different for you now. May the coming years be gentle, for you and yours.
Here is the song for Peter’s retirement. It was fun to do at the time, but seems to not be enough of a tribute, looking back at it. (It is done to the tune of “Somewhere Over The Rainbow”).
Somewhere around Peter Murton
Somewhere over in E-block
Way over there
There’s a man that we love
A man without much hair
Somewhere over in E-block
We are blue
The man that has led us
Is going to retire too
Sometimes he works upon his car
And forgets about who we are
Where dollars melt like lemon drops
And Peter thinks of cars with open tops
That’s where you’ll find him
Somewhere over in E-block
Teachers retire
People are retiring in E-block
Why then, oh why can’t I
Sometimes we watch him give a talk
And laugh out loud without a care
He melts our hearts like lemon drops
When he takes us from meeting spots
That’s where you’ll find us
Somewhere over in E-block
Teachers retire
People are retiring in E-block
Why then, oh why can’t I
If old Peter Murton retires
Over in E-block
Why, oh why can’t I
Lots of love,
Julie and Ken Walker
