Deepest sympathy to you all. The last of a great jovial family. Uncle Maurice outlived them all. Now smooching auntie Merle up in Heaven. Sorry I was unable to attend his funeral. But you were in my thoughts

Vale, old mate! Always full of enthusiasm and friendship to all. A firm grip and a twinkle in the eye to go with it. We met and quickly became firm mates. Our joint respect for our 7th Battalion forebears brought us together and, I loved our friendship, as did all the Lairds, especially Sharn, the Child Bride! I cherished our trip to France in 2015, as I know you did. HJere we are at the Korean Vets reunion on ANZAC day about 2016.Say G'Day to Ted and Jack and I'll see you on the other side Maurie.

Hi Karen, Anne, Susan & Lauren. A great send off for Maurie today. One little story I meant to pass on. He used to have lunch with myself and some friends regularly and would time them for the week before one of his motivational talks because he liked to tell a joke during his talks and he wanted to test the jokes out on us. Here’s one of Maurie’s jokes.
“ A police officer on patrol noticed a lady driving past knitting as she was driving. She can’t do that thought the officer so he drove up to her and yelled to her ‘pull over’. No said the lady. Scarf”
We all groaned and said great work Maurie.

Deepest sympathy to Karen, Susan, Anne and families on the loss of your dad, Maurice. Fondest memories of him as a school girl. He was always a showman and so dapper. I know he will be so missed by you all. Mum sends her condolences as well.
Love Fran and Terry and the Candela Family.

Met Maurice in 2015 on the Western Front at a ceremony for two newly identified 7th Bn Soldiers. The friendship that began that day I will cherish with great fondness for ever. Popping over to Yarravile for a beer and chat, and phone call chats were always a highlight for me. A better bloke I have not met. Confolences to his family, Goodbye my Cobber and God Bless.

Privileged to meet Maurie in 2015 when he visited the Western Front. We talked in Passchendaele where his father fought in WW1.

I will always remember him as a lovely bloke.

Vale Maurie.

Deepest sympathy to Karen, Graham and all the Butterworth family. I felt like I knew Maurie well by all the wonderful stories his beautiful daughter Karen told us over the years. He was an amazing character who lived a fabulous life. I know he will be missed deeply by many, particularly by his caring and loving daughters. Sending lots of love to you Karen xoxo

Maurie was a unique individual, whose life journey was as vibrant as it was inspirational, and I am lucky to have been able to call him a mate. He was a true gentleman with the ability to connect with all types of people, with a love of his family, friends and for cricket. Memories of meeting up for the first day of the first test in Brisbane, his bear like handshake, his knowledge and wit will stay with me. I was lucky to have spent time with Maurie looking for his brother John’s memorial at Enoggera Army barracks which was very moving. Although he is gone, we won’t say goodbye for wherever he is, we have our memories to comfort all of us. Rest in peace.

We were saddened to hear of Maurie’s passing and send our deepest condolences to the girls and extended family.
We met Maurie while researching his brother Jack for a Korean War project and he soon became a much loved friend of the family. He visited the farm, we did a jazz trip to Halls Gap and a theatre show in the city. He was always interested in our endeavours at the Stawell Gift and watched a few of Paul’s Superules matches at Williamstown. Always generous, he spent an evening sharing stories about his Dad with my nephew Nick before he went to Gallipoli for the 100th anniversary and put a poppy on the memorial for his Dads best mate.
We will miss his stories, quick wit, and passion for life.
Rest easy Maurie - the heavens have gained another star.
The Gunning family xx

Maurie was a wonderful Father in law who always showed absolute love and support for all members of his Family and their partners.
His zest for life never wained and was shared with many people during his 92 plus years.
I am truly thankful for his accepting of me into the Butterworth Family.
In later years we shared many chats regarding wood turning which he introduced me to via gifting me his lathe and equipment, it was always so joyous to hear from Karen that he enjoyed what had been made.
From one turner to another rest in peace dear Maurie.
Graham

Maurie was a great man with a great heart, he loved life his family and of course his cricket. The First Day Club in Brisbane was blessed with the addition of Maurie, although he had quite a few years on all of us, he was able to keep up with the best of us. He always had a smile and a tale or two to tell, he had a great sense of humour and loved a beer or more with the boys. Our days at the cricket will forever now be just that little bit quieter Maurie you were a man among men men and will be sadly missed by all,
Howzat,
Your cricket loving mate Russell
