Sincere and heartfelt condolences to John, Andrew, Duncan and Rohan, family and friends. Heather was my guiding midwife at a tough time, she was a brilliant and caring nurse but the fact we knew her made it even more special. I always loved our chats, laughs and her beautiful smile. I was blessed to have a long chat several months ago at the Epworth. The conversation was centred around my kids and my family. She was only concerned for others. Such a genuine and strong lady who we will miss very much x

Heartfelt condolences to John and family at this sad time. Although our time together was many years ago now, our friendship was cherished, with Heather remembered with great fondness as a vibrant and kind soul.
In 1963 I accepted the invitation of a work colleague to go on a blind date with a trainee nurse from Geelong. It was the best decision that I ever made. The nurse that I met that night was Heather Higgins. Two years later we married. Now, almost 56 years later it is time to say "goodbye" to Heather. Heather, you have given me a wonderful life. We have raised three sons, had successful and fulfilling professional lives and enjoyed our retirement. Last week you told me that we had a fortunate life. You mentioned how proud you were of the boys who have become caring parents and allowed us to be blessed with wonderful grandchildren. We spoke about the friendships that we made over the years and of how much you enjoyed y our nursing and midwifery training and careers. You also told me how grateful you are to the medical and nursing people who have looked after you - especially over the last three or four years. You particularly mentioned Ric. Milner, Deb. Harley, Philip Campbell, Damien Dowling, Gemma Strickland, Damien Holdaway and Tim O'Brien. You also wanted to make sure that I didn't forget the nurses and ward staff at St. John of God, Geelong who you described as friends as well as carers. After your trip to the Royal Melbourne Hospital last week you made it clear that you were happy to remain in palliative care at St. John's and not to seek other treatment options. You were at peace with your decision. After all that you have been through, you'd had enough. It was the right decision. My darling, I'm so sorry that we haven't been able to complete all that we wanted to do in recent years but your strength throughout all these adversities has inspired us all. I know that you sometimes didn't want to be called "strong" but you were. You have supported the boys and me in every way and always placed your needs below ours. I love you so very much and will miss you, your love and friendship and your cooking. Thank you for everything Heather, I will never forget you. My life is empty without you. John.

A woman who displayed excellent leadership and tender care as my Charge Midwife in the mid 1990s. Sleep peacefully Heather. You were an amazing woman who lived life to the full. When I heard about Heather I messaged the boys saying that in the almost 40 years we’ve known your family I can genuinely say I never saw her without a smile, and she always had something nice to say. Darling Heather, Twelve months have passed since you left us . It has been a difficult time for all of us, but your incredible strength in adversity has enabled me to continue without you. I miss you and your love and will never forget our time together. You took a lead in raising our three sons and supporting me. You are remembered by everyone as a wonderful mother, friend, midwife and nurse. The passage of time does not diminish my love for you and all you brought to our 55 years of marriage. Your love, strength, sense of humor, cooking, parenting skills (and support for the Cats) will never be forgotten. I love you and miss you, Heather. John.
Tomorrow will mark 1 year since you physically left our lives but you live on in our hearts and minds every single day. You were the greatest Mum, Mother in law and Grandma we could ever have wished for. You taught all of us how to live a wonderful, happy and meaningful life, you were the role model we all aspire to be. Thank you once again for everything you taught me and all the love you gave to me, Denise, Alistair and Cameron. We all miss you terribly but are forever great full that we had you in our lives.
