My dear friend Elaine, What a blessing for me to have met you when I lived in Ocean Grove. We lunched together, laughed together and your support through my difficult time was second to none. I didn’t see a lot of you when I moved back to Melbourne but we communicated via texts and phone calls. Rest in peace my beautiful friend ❤️ xx

We were housekeepers for Elaine for 8 years. Elaine was very generous, had a great sense of humour, a tad stubborn, a bit of a perfectionist and a strict boss - if something was missed in the housekeep that would be high on the agenda for next visit. Elaine was such a terrific motivator for John in his daily life. Her devotion and dedication in caring for John was amazing. Will so much miss the fun we had and the sharing of our lives.

Elaine and I met at hydrotherapy at the Ocean Grove Recreation Centre 14 years ago. We shared our leftist leanings, enjoyment of articles in The Age and great delight when either of us had a letter published. She was so worldly wise, witty and mischievous.. In her usual direct manner she would cut through the nonsense and deflection of what people said to her (including me). Our coffee and pots of tea sessions in local cafes were times of both of us unloading our gripes and acknowledging how lucky we were in our close circles. Her best fortune was her beloved children and grandchildren. And her passion for John. Such was her devotion to him that she wanted to be by his side and fiercely guard his well-being until she was too ill to do so. Being together in care was essential to her as she became more frail. Mind you, she was also very keen on the actor Bill Nighy. Without realising she would die the next day day, I sent her a photo of Bill reading books at a cafe table. It must have taken a lot of effort but her reply was “ Nice picture.” I like to think it made her smile. I miss Elaine so much - a precious friend later in life. No one else like her, ever.

Elaine and I met in the 80s when we were education consultants based in Ashwood, Melbourne. She was cheeky and anti authoritarian and I loved her for it. I like to think I helped her clarify her burgeoning feminist and political leanings, and later I played a rewarding role in the first meeting with her beloved John Hurst. We moved on and away over the years of careers and growing families, then into our older times, but always kept in touch. She remained my much loved faraway friend. She was forthright and fabulous and I’ll miss her forever. Vale Elaine. ❤️

Hydrotherapy brought us together as friends in recent years. Elaine and I had lifelong learning in common: learning about people, the world and relationships. We shared a passion for the welfare of women and children, as well as the welfare of systems and democracies here and around the world. I miss my colourful elegant friend, my pragmatic and sensible friend, my genuine friend. I miss your bright smiles, your sometimes mischievous wit, our challenging conversations, your warm welcomes and the fun we had together. I so admire the way you took up every opportunity offered to you. Elaine's love for John was realistic and beautiful. How privileged we were to be witness to this. Thankyou Elaine for allowing me to share friendship with you. I have learnt so much from you. Doug and I miss our fabulous unique friend. We send our heartfelt condolences to John and his family.

My beautiful ‘Best Friend’ Elaine Our 22 years of haircuts and shenanigans. We shared so many laughs cries and craziness. You were a big part of my life. You were a part of my children’s lives and I am so grateful for that. There was always a birthday card and numerous little gifts over the years from knitting baby clothes and blankets to dolls clothes and silly books that you would stumble upon. Anything that would make me raise an eyebrow ,you were happy with ! I never knew it was possible to have a friend who was 40 years my senior, but you proved me wrong. You taught me so much about life, you kept me on the straight and narrow and numerous times told me to put on my big girl pants and soldier on. Oh we did have some laughs. We shared a wicked sense of humour with lots of inside jokes that were some times a little evil. I will miss you more than I can explain. I know that your beautiful John will be very well cared for. Until we meet again Stay naughty Stay crazy And just know that you will be dearly missed I love you
